Chartering the British Virgin Islands with kids

A crewed catamaran is one of the few holidays where the adults genuinely relax and the children are busy from breakfast until they fall asleep.

Why a catamaran and not a monohull

A catamaran sits flat. It does not heel over under sail, which is the single thing that makes children — and plenty of adults — nervous on a sailing holiday. The decks are wide, the cockpit is enclosed and shaded, and there is a lot of boat between a child and the water. The British Virgin Islands helps too: the islands are close together, the water is sheltered, and the sails between anchorages are short enough that nobody gets bored or seasick.

Where the children sleep

Five queen en-suite cabins, each with its own bathroom and its own air-conditioning. Families usually put two children in a queen together, or split them with a parent. The two aft cabins also carry an extra single bunk, which is useful for a third child in a family group. Every cabin has a door and a head, so the usual charter problem of a child berthed in the salon does not arise.

Food, which is usually the real question

The preference sheet is where this gets solved. The chef cooks the adult menu and the children's favorites alongside each other, every day, and that is normal rather than a favor. Allergies are handled properly. If a child will eat four things, say so honestly on the form and those four things will be aboard. Birthday cakes are routine.

What keeps them occupied

Two sea scooters, paddleboards, a kayak, a wakeboard and a kneeboard, a floating mat, and snorkel gear. The snorkeling at Norman Island and the caves at Treasure Point is the usual first hit. The Baths at Virgin Gorda — granite boulders and grottoes you climb and swim through — is the day most children talk about afterwards, and it is worth the early start to get there first.

Starlink is aboard, which matters more than parents like to admit on day four.

Days that work, and days that do not

Short sails, a beach every day, and the water toys out as soon as the anchor is down. Anegada is a long open passage and is the one day worth thinking about with young children; plenty of families do it and love it, but the captain will be honest about the forecast. Beach bars like Soggy Dollar on Jost Van Dyke are genuinely family-friendly during the day and less so in the evening, which the crew will steer you around.

Safety

The yacht carries child life jackets, the crew briefs everyone on the first day, and the captain sets the rules on the transom and the swim platform with the parents rather than around them. Guests never have to work the boat, so the adults are never choosing between sailing and watching a child.

Common questions

Is a crewed catamaran charter good for families with young children?

Yes, and it is one of the better options. A catamaran sails flat rather than heeling, the BVI is sheltered with short hops between islands, the crew does all the sailing, and there are water toys, snorkeling and a beach every day.

Where do children sleep on the yacht?

In the five queen en-suite cabins, usually two children sharing a queen or split with a parent. The two aft cabins also carry an extra single bunk. Every cabin has its own door, head and air-conditioning.

Will the chef cook for picky eaters?

Yes. You fill in a preference sheet before the trip and the chef cooks the children's favorites alongside the adult menu every day. Allergies are handled properly, and celebration cakes are routine.

Do children need to know how to swim or sail?

No sailing experience is needed by anyone, and guests never work the boat. Child life jackets are aboard and the crew briefs everyone on the first day; the captain sets the swim-platform rules with the parents.

What is the best day in the BVI with kids?

Usually the Baths at Virgin Gorda, where you climb and swim through granite boulders and grottoes. Go early to have them to yourselves. The snorkeling at Norman Island is the other reliable hit.
